James works with both teenagers and adults. He specializes in working with individuals experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, addictions, grief & loss, self-esteem issues, and behavior problems. Additionally, James has experience assisting young adults in managing social difficulties and transitioning into independence and self-sufficiency. James strives to help clients discover their own internal motivations for change, especially in regard to addictive behaviors and destructive thought patterns
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
James earned his Master of Social Work degree from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI and is a Licensed Master Social Worker and a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. James earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Albion College, Albion, MI, and a Master’s Degree in Education from Bank Street College, New York, NY. James was a certified K-12 schoolteacher for more than a decade, focusing much of his educational career on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders and their parents, working in city and metro-Detroit school systems. In James’ current career, he has focused on mental health and substance abuse issues with adults, with a significant focus on relapse recovery utilizing both individual and group therapy. James integrates Behavioral Couples Therapy (BCT) and The Gottman Method when working with couples in relationship counseling.

James is passionate about helping clients develop self-awareness, a positive self-image, and coping skills so that they may live with hope and confidence. He believes that a strong rapport between therapist and client is the foundation of successful treatment. Through his authenticity, mild manner, and collaborative approach, James guides clients to discover effective ways to cope and regain happiness. James utilizes a variety of treatment modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Through CBT, James helps individuals identify and change unhealthy thought patterns that influence behaviors and emotions.
