As a Registered Play Therapist and Supervisor, Margaret’s pleasant and disarming demeanor enables her to establish rapport readily with her clients – even with children who are hesitant or resistant about entering therapy. However, Margaret does not limit her Therapeutic Play expertise to working with children, and is equally effective working with adolescents and adults, integrating a wide variety of therapeutic approaches.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Margaret completed her undergraduate work in sociology at Indiana University, and earned her Master of Science in Education and Allied Professions – Community Counseling degree from the University of Dayton. She furthered her academic qualifications through earning certification as a Certified Play Therapist and has been training and supervising play therapists more than a decade.
Margaret has worked effectively with children and adults who have experienced bereavement and with children who have experienced trauma and / or are in crisis. Her work in crisis management includes community volunteer organizations and was a part of a County-Wide Mental Health Crisis Team centered in Mansfield, Ohio.
A BIT ABOUT MARGARET
Margaret specializes in Therapeutic Play, employing a variety of techniques including Sand Tray Therapy and Family Play Therapy. Margaret assists children in communicating through play, viewing toys as words and play as the child’s language. She assists children in adapting to the stressors they face through the medium of play and enjoys being a part of the cognitive and emotional developmental journey of each of children with whom she works. Margaret understands that acting out behavior is usually an indication that the child has exhausted known coping or problem solving techniques or that the child’s emotional state is prompting a strong expression. She is also skilled in utilizing Therapeutic Play approaches with adults to process unresolved emotional conflict and distress.
